Chicken Coops
How much space does a chicken need in a coop?
+
A chicken needs at least 0.3 m² of indoor space in the coop, and preferably 1 m² of outdoor space in a run. For 4 chickens, we recommend a coop of at least 120x60 cm. The more space, the happier and healthier your chickens will be. Take our
quiz for personalised advice.
What is the best material for a chicken coop?
+
Our chicken coops are made of durable pressure-treated wood (spruce or pine). This is weather-resistant and lasts for years. Some models have a plastic droppings tray for easy maintenance.
What is an automatic chicken door and do I need one?
+
An automatic chicken door opens and closes automatically based on light or a timer. This protects your chickens from predators like foxes and martens, especially at night.
Do I need to assemble the chicken coop myself?
+
Yes, our chicken coops are delivered as a kit with clear instructions. Most models can be assembled by one person in 30 to 40 minutes. All necessary hardware is included.
How many nesting boxes do I need?
+
A rule of thumb is 1 nesting box per 3-4 chickens. Chickens often lay in the same nest, so you need fewer than you might think.

Maintenance & Safety
How do I protect my chickens from foxes?
+
The best protection is a combination of a sturdy coop with closed sleeping quarters and an automatic chicken door. Make sure the coop has no openings larger than 5 cm.
How do I maintain my chicken coop?
+
Clean the coop weekly: remove dirty bedding and droppings. Empty the droppings tray regularly. Check monthly for damage and treat wood annually.
Do I need to stain or treat the coop?
+
Our coops are already pressure-treated and ready to use. For a longer lifespan, treat 1-2 times per year with wood stain. Never use paint or lacquer on the inside.
Are there regulations for keeping chickens in Belgium?
+
In Belgium, you may keep chickens without a permit, provided you comply with local building regulations. Check with your municipality. Most municipalities allow 3-6 chickens.
